Unlike other reserve military components, the National Guard receives both
State and Federal education benefits. Other features that are unique to the
National Guard is that our members receive in-state tuition rates at state
universities, and that our members can use their tuition assistance and book
money benefits prior to attending basic training and advanced individual
training (AIT). Our tuition assistance programs can be used for approved
trade schools, undergraduate and graduate level courses.
State Tuition Assistance
The State of North Carolina funds up to 100% of tuition costs & fees, not to exceed $4,515
per person per fiscal year. State Tuition Assistance may be used in addition to the
Montgomery G.I. Bill, Army National Guard G.I. Bill Kicker, Active Duty Montgomery G.I. Bill
and Pell Grants.
• Eligibility begins the day a person joins the National Guard, prior to boot camp or even
while still in high school.
• The college or university attended must be a nationally or regionally accredited
institution.
• Tuition Assistance benefits can be used for the following:
1. Completion of secondary school education at a community college or
technical institute.
2. Trade or vocational training.
3. Two-year associate degree.
4. Four-year baccalaureate degree.
5. Graduate degree.
100% Federal Tuition Assistance
The Army National Guard funds up to 100% of tuition costs and fees, not to exceed $250 per semester hour and will be limited
to $4500 per person per fiscal year. Federal Tuition Assistance may be used in addition to the Montgomery G.I. Bill, Army
National Guard G.I. Bill Kicker, Active Duty Montgomery G.I. Bill and Pell Grants.
• Eligibility begins the day a person joins the Army National Guard, prior to boot camp or even while still in high school.
• Students need to complete courses in which Tuition Assistance is provided before their Expiration Term of Service date.
• Commissioned officers must agree to remain in the Guard for at least 4 years following completion of the course in which
Tuition Assistance is provided.
• The college or university attended must be a nationally or regionally accredited institution.
• Tuition Assistance funds will not be disbursed without verification of enrollment.
• The institution must provide the soldier with documentation clearly describing the cost of each course.
• Student must remain a satisfactory participant in the Army National Guard.
* State and Federal Tuition Assistance may be used together not to exceed 100% of tuition cost.
Combining the state and federal tuition assistance programs gives you access to $9,015.00 per year in
tuition assistance.
Student Loan Repayment Program (SLRP)
The Student Loan Repayment Program will pay up to $20,000 to those who have an existing student loan obligation at the time
of enlistment in the National Guard. Members can use the Student Loan Repayment Program, in addition to Tuition Assistance
and GI Bill Kicker. This benefit can be received in addition to the Enlistment Bonus. Entitlement covers the initial contract
period only.
Loans eligible for repayment include:
1. Stafford Loans (subsidized)
2. Stafford Loans (unsubsidized)
3. Federally Insured Student Loans (FISL)
4. Perkins Loans (Formerly NDSL)
5. Auxiliary Loans to Assist Students (ALAS)
6. Supplemental Loans for Students (SLS)
7. Consolidated Loan Program (CLP)
8. William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program

In-State Tuition Rates
As enacted by the North Carolina General Assembly S1058 [SL 2005-130] pertaining to the state university system. Any
member of a North Carolina National Guard unit who is a non-resident shall be eligible to be charged the in-state tuition rate.
Montgomery G.I. Bill - Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR), Chapter 1606
The National Guard offers the Montgomery G.I. Bill - Selected Reserve Chapter 1606 (MGIB-SR), a tuition assistance program to
help with college expenses. This money is deposited directly into the student's account to be used at his or her discretion.
This benefit pays a stipend, up to $317 a month (for full-time enrollment), while attending college (or other approved technical
school). This program requires No contribution from the member and is the first program offered by the Department of
Veterans Affairs which does NOT require service in the active Armed Forces in order to qualify. Over a period of 36 months,
one can receive up to $11,412.00
The Montgomery G.I. Bill - Selected Reserve may be used in addition to the 100% Federal Tuition Assistance Program, NC State
Tuition Assistance, and the National Guard G.I. Bill Kicker. Prior service members may also be entitled to the MGIB-SR.
Montgomery G.I. Bill - Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) Kicker
The Army National Guard (MGIB-SR) Kicker pays up to an additional $350 a month while attending college (or other approved
technical school). Paid as a stipend, this incentive pays up to $12,600 over a period of 36 months.
