These new cards have replaced the old Military ID. Each card has a small
computer chip embedded in it. You will need this card to log onto AKO to change
your password. These are issued during Basic Training.
Your AKO password must be changed periodically (approximately every 120 to
150 days). The only way to change your password is with a CAC ID Card. Don't
forget that you must have a working AKO account to apply for Federal Tuition
Assistance.
If you have not been to Basic Training, or did not receive a CAC card while you
were there, and your initial AKO password has expired, you will have to visit an ID
card facility to be issued a card. You must know what your blood type is to be
issued your CAC. Since this process usually takes place during Basic Training, if
you do not know what your blood type is you will not be able to get a card before
Basic Training.
When you receive your card, you will either choose or be issued a lengthy pin
number. You will need this pin each time you use the card.
If you have to go to one of the facilities to get a CAC Card, you need to call
ahead and ask what documents to bring with you. The contact information
for each facility is listed below.
If you lose or forget your pin number, the only way to get a new one is by visiting
one of the CAC card facilities.
If you would like to purchase your own personal CAC card reader, you can do so at
http://www.txsystems.com/scm.html#scr331. We recommend model SCR 331.
With a military discount, this will cost you approximately $27. To install the reader,
you must first download the middleware. You can get it for free by signing into
AKO and clicking on "Quick Links". There will be a tab under that labeled "CAC".
From there, click on "CAC Resource Center."
