Individuals are eligible to start attending drill and getting paid for training upon
enlistment. You will attend one weekend drill each month upon enlistment and two
weeks of annual training each summer after the completion of your initial entry
training. Members of the National Guard are trained to the same standards as the
active army, and attend Army Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training
(AIT). Basic Training is 9 weeks long, and AIT starts at 5 weeks and goes longer in
length depending on the job that you choose. You must start basic training within
360 days from the day that you enlist. This gives you maximum flexibility to
schedule your basic and AIT around your school or work schedule while attending
monthly drills prior to basic training. You are paid for all training that you attend
and your training will follow one of the programs below:
Training Requirements - Non Prior Service
Recruit Sustainment Program (RSP)
Any drills that you attend prior to completing basic and AIT will be with the Recruit
Sustainment Program (RSP), regardless of the job that you enlisted for. In the RSP
you will be trained by the local National Guard Recruiters to prepare you for basic
and AIT. You will learn such things as how to properly wear your uniform, military
customs and courtesies, how to march, basic map reading, land navigation, physical
fitness training and many other things to prepare you to attend basic. Because of
this training program the National Guard has a high percentage of its members who
are honor graduates at basic training. After completion of basic and AIT you are
released from the RSP program to your unit of assignment.

Training Requirements - Prior Service
Prior service members of the Army and Marine Corps who have completed initial entry training are not required to
complete basic training again. Members of others branches of the service who have completed initial entry
training will be required to complete a 4 week transition course to familiarize you with army training and doctrine.
You may keep the same Military Occupational Speciality (MOS) that you previously had if it is available or you may
choose a new MOS. Depending on the MOS, training for a new MOS may be conducted in lieu of your regularly
scheduled drills and annual training. You may not enlist at a pay grade higher than you were discharged at during
your last period of service. Being accepted at a pay grade of E-5 or above is looked at on a case by case basis.

Split Option Training
This option is available to students and seasonal farm workers. In this program you will split your training up over
two summers, IE: you will attend basic training one summer and then attend you job training (AIT) during the
following summer. This will allow most people the opportunity to attend their initial entry training without having to
miss time at school.
Straight Through Training
In this option you will attend both basic training and AIT while you are away for training.
